 He was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan (Ohio). He started school at the age of 7 but was expelled due to his deafness. It was then that his mother home schooled him. Edison worked selling newspapers and as a writer when he founded his own newspaper. He studied mechanics, physics and chemistry. In 1862 he developed the double telegraph. He improved the telephone invented by Graham Bell. Edison carried out many more inventions but the most outstanding one was the electric light. He died on October, 18, 1931
