Laurent
Clerc
Internacional Sign Language Video
Length: 1m 15 sg
He was born on December 26, 1785 in France. When he was a year old, Clerc fell from a chair into the hearth, suffering a blow to the head, part of his face was burnt and he became completely deaf. When he was 12 he was taken to the Royal Institution for the Deaf in Paris. In 1816, having been teaching for 8 years, he met Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. Gallaudet had travelled to Paris to learn the best method to teach deaf people. They both travelled to America. Gaulledet taught Clerck English and Clerc taught Gaulledet Sign language. On April 15, 1817 they opened the first school for the Deaf. Gallaudet became the school director and Clerc became one of its first teachers. Clerc died on July 18, 1869.
