Juan Fernández Navarrete, surrnamed El Mudo (The Mute) since he was deprived of his hearing and speech at the age of 3. He was born in Logrońo in 1526 and died in Toledo in 1579 when he was 53 years old. He is regarded as one of the best painters of the Golden Age. He was contemporary with painters as famous as El Greco, Sanchez Coello,,, but he was the only one who the King Phillip II trusted. His most outstanding works are: El Martirio de Santiago, San Jerónimo penitente, el Nacimiento de Jesucristo, San Pedro y San Pablo, El Bautismo de Jesús, su Autorretrato..
